Over the past decade, I've photographed countless seniors and helped families celebrate this special season. Along the way, I've picked up some tips and little pieces of advice that can make Family Weekend even more enjoyable. We live in the Columbia area, have participated in Family Weekend in a variety of ways and tailgate regularly, so I guess I'm a bit of an expert at Gamecock football, tailgating and parents weekend! I created this guide to answer some popular questions and help you spend less time worrying about logistics and more time making memories with your student. The first decision you'll need to make is whether or not you want to attend the football game. If you do, the easiest option is purchasing tickets through the Family Weekend package offered by the university. Tickets for this game typically sell quickly, so if you miss the deadline, keep an eye on resale sites like Ticketmaster and StubHub. In my experience, resale prices often become more reasonable in the two to three weeks leading up to the game as people finalize their plans and tickets become available. You can also check the USC parent Facebook groups and Gamecock ticket resale pages, but always be cautious and verify that you're dealing with a legitimate seller.
The Football Game
The next thing to figure out is whether your student will sit with you or sit in the student section. As much as you may want your student by your side for the entire game, many students choose to sit with their friends in the student section—and honestly, this is part of their Carolina experience! If your student sits with you, they will need to purchase a ticket with your group. Their seat in the student section is covered by their athletic events fee.
Most students who request tickets through the University will receive one for Family Weekend. This isn't guaranteed though, so they need to make sure they're attending other athletic events throughout the year to earn points toward future ticket priority. The point system can feel confusing to parents, but don't worry - your student will likely understand exactly how it works! Even if your student doesn't have enough points for a lower-level seat, they'll typically still receive admission to the game with seats in the upper-level student section.
One more important reminder: Williams-Brice Stadium has a clear bag policy, so check the requirements before heading to the game.

You can't go to a Gamecock football game without experiencing a good tailgate! One of the best parts of a Carolina football weekend is simply being outside, surrounded by thousands of fans wearing garnet and black. Gamecock fans are incredibly welcoming, and there's a real sense of community that makes Family Weekend feel extra special. So, what should you do for your tailgate? Here are a few options depending on the type of experience you want.
1. Official USC Family Weekend Tailgate
The official USC Family Weekend Tailgate is a great option, especially for first-time families or parents who don't know anyone hosting a tailgate yet. This option can feel a little pricey, but I think it is worth considering because it gives you the fun atmosphere of an SEC tailgate experience without the stress of planning, cooking, hauling supplies, or figuring out where to go. The USC Family Weekend tailgate includes a buffet of classic Southern tailgate food, soft drinks and sweet tea, live music and appearances by the Carolina Band, cheerleaders, and Cocky.
The only way to purchase Family Weekend Tailgate wristbands is through the university's Family Weekend package, which also includes Friday events such as the President's Meet & Greet and Rock the Roost party. Even if you don't plan to attend every Friday event, you may still find that the convenience and experience of the tailgate makes the package worthwhile.
2. Do It Yourself Without Doing It Yourself!
You can reserve a professionally hosted tailgate through The Tailgate Group at Gamecock Park, located across from Williams-Brice Stadium. They offer a variety of packages, starting with a simple setup that includes a tent and chairs, with options to add tables, additional seating, TVs, catering and beverage packages. This is a great option for families traveling from out of town because you simply show up and everything is already set up for you. At the end of the day, they handle the cleanup and teardown. The cost can add up quickly though, so consider splitting the package with another family or some friends.

3. The Traditional Gamecock Tailgate
We've been tailgating for more than 35 years, so we have it down to a science! We have a spot at the Armory, where we set up a tent, tailgate chairs, a large fan, tables with food, and coolers full of drinks. We usually set up a cornhole set on the lawn by the tanks, throw a football, and relax under the tent. Visitors are always welcome - if you walk by and recognize me, stop by and say hello!
What does a typical USC tailgate look like? Honestly, it can be anything you want it to be. We've done burgers and traditional tailgate food, a Lowcountry boil with shrimp fresh from the coast, breakfast sandwiches for an early kickoff and tables full of appetizers and "covered dish" favorites shared by everyone. If you don't want to cook, there are plenty of local options. You can order a complete tailgate package from places like Roxanne's Market or Hudson's BBQ, or keep it simple and grab a bucket of fried chicken on your way to the stadium.
Wondering where to park for a tailgate? f you don't already have a tailgate spot, you might find spots available through resale sites like StubHub or in Facebook groups. The other option is to purchase parking the day of the game in one of the private lots surrounding the stadium. Many businesses along Rosewood Drive, Shop Road, and Bluff Road open their lots on game days. Prices typically range from about $25–$60+, depending on location and proximity to the stadium.
4. Gamecock Village
This is a great option that some first year parents are unaware of, and a great way to experience the excitement of game day without committing to a full tailgate! Gamecock Village is right across from Williams-Brice Stadium on Bluff Road, and easy to access if you're taking the USC shuttle. You can arrive at your own pace, walk through the area, and enjoy the atmosphere. You'll find food trucks, a beer tent, family activities and live entertainment and plenty of opportunities to meet fellow Gamecock fans.
One of the highlights of the afternoon is the Gamecock Walk, when the football team makes its way through cheering fans before entering the stadium. It usually takes place about 2.5 hours before kickoff and is a great chance to see the players, coaches, cheerleaders, and Cocky up close. Immediately afterward, enjoy the Carolina Band's pregame pep rally as the Mighty Sound of the Southeast prepares to make its way into Williams-Brice Stadium.
5. Frat Lots (If You Dare!)
This experience is very different from the other tailgate options! The Fraternity Lots are a true college-style tailgate experience - think loud music, large crowds, kegs and a high-energy party atmosphere. It's definitely geared more toward students than families, but it can be a fun way to experience game day through your student's eyes. Male students who are members of a fraternity have access to the lots, while female students can purchase entry wristbands in advance. During Family Weekend, parents are often welcomed at no additional charge, although policies can vary from year to year. The frat lots are managed independently and are not affiliated with the University at all.
6. Club & Other Organization Tailgates
Many clubs host their own tailgates at various spots around the stadium and usually do something for family weekend too. A few organizations that do this include Club Swim, Club Baseball, professional organizations, Young Life, and many others. One of the best parts of Family Weekend is getting a glimpse into your student's Carolina experience - so if they're excited about a club or organization they've joined, check out their tailgate and meet their new lifelong friends!

No matter how you decide to arrive, bring your patience! One thing I've learned after spending so many football weekends on campus is that everything takes longer than you expect. And Family Weekend traffic rivals the traffic I've seen at some of the biggest games over the years! My best advice is: give yourself plenty of time - and then add another 30 minutes!
Option 1: Drive Yourself
If you drive, plan for traffic. People begin tailgating hours before kickoff, and traffic builds throughout the day from every direction around the stadium. The busiest time is typically 1-3 hours before kickoff, but leaving after the game can be even more challenging as thousands of fans all exit at the same time.
There are plenty of paid parking lots around Williams-Brice Stadium and the State Fairgrounds area. Prices vary depending on location, but expect to pay anywhere from $25–$60+ for game day parking. The closer you park to the stadium, the higher the price and the longer you may wait to exit after the game.
Option 2: Take the Shuttle
If you aren't tailgating at your car, my recommendation is to take the shuttle. The USC shuttle is the easiest and least stressful option, especially if you're staying downtown, attending the Family Weekend Tailgate, visiting Gamecock Village or just planning to tailgate hop. Shuttles run from several campus locations and drop off near the State Fairgrounds, which puts you at an easy walk to the various game day experiences. The shuttle allows you to avoid stadium traffic and searching for parking, spend more time enjoying the tailgates and activities and, best of all, lets someone else handle the driving! This is how most on-campus students get to the game, and it's a great choice for parents who want to experience everything without worrying about logistics.
Option 3: Rideshare
Uber and Lyft are available, but they can be difficult to find on game days and often come with significant surge pricing. If you must ride share, have them drop you off/pick you up far from the stadium - at least a mile away.
what to wear
You may have heard that people dress up for SEC football games, and they absolutely do - but you'll also see a little bit of everything. Some women might wear a cute garnet or black dress, while others choose a Gamecock tee, jersey, or casual gameday outfit. Most men wear a polo, golf shirt, or dry-fit shirt with shorts or khakis. As a photographer, I tell my clients to wear something they love because confidence naturally shines through in photos. The same advice applies here: wear what you love, and you'll feel great in it!
The most important thing? Dress for the Columbia heat! Family Weekend is usually in September, and Columbia can still be incredibly hot and humid then. My typical game day outfit is usually shorts, a garnet or black top, and a few Gamecock colored accessories. If you have time to shop for a fun gameday outfit, check out Miss Cocky, Westmore in Irmo or Rivals in Harbison. They're all great places to pick up Gamecock apparel and accessories.
Comfortable shoes are a must. You'll likely walk much more than you expect between campus, tailgates, Gamecock Village, and Williams-Brice Stadium. And don't forget your sunscreen! Finally, don't stress too much about what to wear. Whether you're dressed up in your favorite Gamecock dress or keeping it casual in a Carolina T-shirt, you'll fit right in. The best accessory you can wear is plenty of garnet and black - and a Cocky cloth to swing when "Sandstorm" starts playing!

Things to do in Columbia
USC football game days can be A LOT! It's an all-day experience filled with crowds, noise, walking, and that infamous Columbia heat. If you decide to skip the game, there are still plenty of places to watch it! Most local restaurants and sports bars show the game - Market on Main in the Vista and Gather Cola in the Bull Street District are good options - and there's usually a watch party on campus.
If football isn't your thing - or you simply want a break from the crowds - there are still plenty of ways to enjoy your weekend. Believe it or not, some of my favorite weekends on campus have nothing to do with football. Columbia has so many wonderful places to explore (with some great photo ops!) and spending uninterrupted time with your student is often the highlight of the weekend. Grab lunch, explore Columbia, go shopping, or simply let them show you their favorite places around town. Family Weekend is about spending time together, not checking every possible event off the schedule!
1. Spend Saturday Morning at Soda City Market
Soda City Market on Main Street is one of Columbia's favorite Saturday traditions. This open-air market features local vendors, food, coffee, art, and live entertainment. It's a great way to explore downtown Columbia before the excitement of game day begins.
2. Riverbanks Zoo & Garden
Riverbanks Zoo is one of Columbia's most popular attractions and a great option for families. Located along the Saluda River, the zoo and gardens offer animal exhibits, beautiful landscaping, activities, and plenty to explore. This is especially fun if younger siblings are joining the weekend.
3. Columbia's Riverwalk & Riverfront Park
For something relaxing and free, take a walk along one of Columbia's riverfront trails. Close to campus are Riverfront Park and Canal in downtown Columbia and the West Columbia Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater. The trails along the Saluda and Congaree Rivers offer beautiful views and are an easy way to enjoy the outdoors.
4. Congaree National Park
Located about 30 minutes from downtown Columbia, Congaree National Park is South Carolina's only national park and offers easy walking trails through an old-growth bottomland forest. The Boardwalk Loop is a popular option and is accessible for most visitors.
5. Explore The Vista
The Vista is one of Columbia's most popular downtown districts. This walkable area is filled with restaurants, shops, galleries, coffee shops and more, making it a great place to spend an afternoon or evening with your student. If you're staying downtown, The Vista is an easy walk from many hotels and a wonderful place to experience Columbia beyond the USC campus. Tip: If you're visiting during Family Weekend, make dinner reservations well in advance - The Vista is one of the first areas to fill up on football weekends.
6. Lake Murray
Consider extending your trip and renting a VRBO on Lake Murray. This is a wonderful way to slow down after the excitement of game day and make Family Weekend feel more like a true family getaway. You can enjoy the sunset, rent a boat, or simply relax by the water before heading home. If an overnight stay isn't in the plans, you can still experience Lake Murray by visiting one of its public access areas. The Lake Murray Dam is a popular spot for walking, fishing, birdwatching, and taking in scenic views of the lake. Dreher Island State Park is about an hour from campus in Chapin, but offers some great opportunities to picnic, fish, kayak, or simply enjoy some fresh air. It's a peaceful way to unwind and experience one of Columbia's greatest natural attractions.
7. Museums
For a rainy day or a break from the heat, consider one of the local museums, all located right downtown. South Carolina State Museum features interactive exhibits on the state's history, art, science, technology, and even a planetarium. The Columbia Museum of Art is a beautiful downtown museum showcasing an impressive collection of American and European art, rotating exhibitions, and family-friendly programs. EdVenture Children's Museum is one of the largest children's museums in the Southeast, offering hands-on exhibits and interactive play that's perfect for younger siblings visiting Family Weekend.

8. Finley Park
Located just a few blocks from Main Street and the South Carolina State House, Finlay Park is a beautiful 18-acre downtown park that reopened after a major renovation in 2025. It features walking paths, open green spaces, a playground, a splash pad, and scenic views of the Columbia skyline. Throughout the year, Finlay Park also hosts concerts, festivals, outdoor movies, and community eventsIt's a great place to take a relaxing stroll, let younger children play, or enjoy a little downtime between Family Weekend activities.
9. BullStreet District
Just a few minutes from downtown and the USC campus, the BullStreet District is one of Columbia's newest destinations for dining, entertainment, and outdoor recreation. Centered around Segra Park, home of the Columbia Fireflies, the district also features the open-air Gather COLA food hall, unique restaurants, scenic walking areas, and the beautiful Page Ellington Park, also home to a 1.75-acre dog park.
10. Greek Festival (September 17-20, 2026)
This year, Columbia Greek Festival is held the same weekend as Family Weekend and is one of the city's most popular annual events. Located just a few blocks from the USC campus at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the festival features authentic Greek food, homemade pastries, live music, traditional Greek dancing, cultural exhibits, and unique shopping. Admission is free, making it a fun way to experience another side of Columbia while you're in town. If you have a little extra time, I highly recommend stopping by for a gyro...and don't leave without trying the baklava!
Where to eat
Columbia has some fantastic restaurants, but Family Weekend is one of the busiest weekends of the year, so reservations are strongly recommended if they're available. The Vista, Five Points, and downtown areas are all popular choices because they are close to campus and offer a variety of restaurants. Many of my clients celebrate their student's portrait session with dinner afterward and these are usually the first places I suggest to them.
Special Occasion Dinners in Downtown Columbia
• DiVino Rosso - Upscale Italian and one of Columbia’s most unique dining experiences. The only Michelin recommended restaurant in Columbia!
• Motor Supply Bistro - An eclectic menu that changes frequently and focuses on fresh, locally inspired dishes.
• Cola’s Restaurant - Located in a beautifully renovated historic building, this is a great choice for an upscale Southern-inspired meal.
• Halls Chophouse Columbia - A popular choice for celebrations, birthdays, or a “treat your student” kind of dinner.
• George Roberts Wine & Raw Bar - A new location of a local favorite with a menu that offers something for everyone.
• Blue Marlin - A Columbia classic located in a historic train station. A great option for seafood, steaks, and Lowcountry-inspired dishes.
• Gervais & Vine - A cozy tapas and wine restaurant that is perfect for sharing small plates and enjoying a relaxed evening together.
Casual Favorites Near University of South Carolina Campus
• Home Team BBQ - A fun, casual spot for barbecue, wings, and a lively atmosphere.
• Thirsty Fellow - Located near USC and Innovista, this is a popular student-friendly option with pizza, drinks, and a casual atmosphere.
• The Gourmet Shop - A Columbia tradition that is perfect for lunch, brunch, or a casual meal. Their sandwiches and salads are favorites, and the market atmosphere makes it a fun stop.
• Andy’s Deli - A longtime USC-area favorite and a true student/alumni tradition.
• Grill Marks - Gourmet burgers with a fun atmosphere. Bonus: their patio is dog-friendly if your four-legged family member is joining the trip!
• DiPrato’s - A longtime local favorite for lunch or brunch featuring sandwiches, salads, and Italian-inspired dishes. They have an amazing pimento cheese spread and platters you can order for tailgating too!
• California Dreaming - A longtime Columbia favorite - it was popular when I was there back in the 80's! Known for its famous honey croissants, salads, steaks, and sandwiches, it's a great choice for lunch or dinner with the family.
Harbison/Irmo area
If you can't find a table near campus, consider driving to Harbison for some chain type restaurants like Bonefish Grill, Outback Steakhouse or Olive Garden. I live in Irmo (about 20 minutes from campus) and some of my local favorites are:
• The Bistro - A cozy neighborhood favorite featuring steaks, seafood and pasta, often with live music and a great patio if weather permits.
• Tavern on Six - A popular spot known for elevated comfort food, craft cocktails, and one of the best outdoor patios in the Irmo area.
• George Roberts/Ballentine - An upscale but casual restaurant featuring fresh seafood, oysters, steaks, and an extensive wine list.
• Miyabi Japanese Steakhouse - A longtime Columbia favorite where skilled hibachi chefs provide an entertaining dinner experience.
• Don Tequila's Mexican Grill – Authentic Mexican cuisine with generous portions, and refreshing margaritas in a family-friendly atmosphere.
Where to Stay
Reserve your room as soon as possible! Many hotels offer free cancellation, so it's much better to book early than wait. Staying downtown or in The Vista area is incredibly convenient, but it also comes with a higher price tag - especially during Family Weekend and graduation weekend.

If downtown hotels are sold out or outside your budget, don't worry - other areas of town all offer clean, reliable hotels and are an easy 15–30 minute drive from campus.
Irmo/Harbison Area
Another option that many families consider is the Harbison/Irmo area. It's about a 15–20 minute drive to campus and typically offers more affordable rates. The Harbison area is very commercial with the mall, fast food and lots of traffic, but I'd feel comfortable staying at these properties:
• Hilton Garden Inn Columbia/Harbison
• Hampton Inn Columbia I-26/Harbison Blvd.
• Residence Inn Columbia Northwest/Harbison
• StudioRes by Marriott
Lexington
The Lexington area is 20–30 minutes from campus. There are fewer hotel choices, but some families like this area because it's considered safe and has family friendly neighborhoods. Some good options here:
• Hampton Inn & Suites Lexington
• Holiday Inn Express & Suites Lexington
• TownePlace Suites Columbia West/Lexington
Cayce
Cayce is also worth considering because it's only 10-15 minutes from campus, and closer to the airport - but keep in mind that hotel quality here can vary. Be sure to read recent reviews before booking.
Garners Ferry / Fort Jackson
This area has several newer hotels that primarily serve Fort Jackson visitors and is a 15-20 minute drive from campus. There are quite a few newer hotels on Garners Ferry near I-77 for easy highway access.
Northeast Columbia (Killian Road / Clemson Road)
This area has grown tremendously over the last several years and has several newer hotels. The downside is that you'll be about 30 minutes from campus, but it's a very comfortable area with lots of restaurants nearby.
VRBO/Airbnb
Don't overlook VRBO or Airbnb! You can often find homes or condos in neighborhoods like Rosewood, Shandon, or Downtown that put you within minutes of campus and Williams-Brice Stadium. Another fun option is renting a home on Lake Murray. While it is farther away (approximately 30–45 minutes from campus depending on location), it gives your family the opportunity to turn Family Weekend into a relaxing getaway. You can enjoy a beautiful sunset, rent a boat, or simply unwind after the excitement of game day.
One of my favorite things about Family Weekend is watching parents and students simply enjoy being together. These weekends become some of the memories families talk about long after graduation, so don't worry about seeing or doing everything. Spend time together, take plenty of photos, and enjoy this special season while you're in it. It may feel like graduation is still a long way off, but these college years have a way of flying by. Family Weekend is a wonderful reminder to pause, be present, and celebrate this chapter together. Enjoy every moment of your visit to Columbia, and Go Gamecocks!
